My hand shook as I slid the key card down the slot. The green light flashed and the door opened smoothly, but in my mind it creaked mysteriously. I closed it firmly, and yes, quietly, behind me, letting the scent of expensive perfume settle over me like a mantle before I turned and surveyed the territory. I slid the key back into my pocket. Sanctioned snooping felt so odd.

I easily found the suitcases and bags at the back of the walk-in closet. The rows of hanging clothes astounded me. How many outfits could one person wear? I filled one garment bag after another with hanging clothes then slid them into a tall suitcase, obviously made for that purpose.

Holly’s custom-designed luggage made it easy to see which one was for shoes, and it didn’t take me long to get the seemingly endless collection stored away. One thing about it. If Bob didn’t sell the athletic club to me soon, I could always look into a new career as personal assistant to the stars.

By the time I finished the closet and prepared to tackle the drawers, I’d changed my mind. I’d stick to Dear Pru and look for something similar if my day job fell through. Buck was a smooth operator. I would have earned every penny of the Benjamin Franklin I’d refused and possibly more. And so far I’d found nothing but a few notes from fans. Nothing beyond the usual, “You’re my favorite singer” or “I’d love an autographed picture” and a startling number that were variations of, “Will you marry me?”

A loud knock on the door made me dive behind the bed. I admit I even lifted the comforter up to see if I could climb under the bed if I needed to, but there were boards going all the way to the floor. Another knock.

“Jenna? Are you in there?”

My sister. I jumped up and ran to open the door. I grabbed Carly’s arm and pulled her inside. “What are you doing here?” I hissed.

She narrowed her eyes and gave a little shake of her head as if I were crazy. “I came to help you. I told you I would if Marta was resting.”

“I thought you’d call me. Not bang on the door and scream my name.”

“I didn’t scream your name,” she screamed.

“Shh. . .”

“What’s your problem? Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Buck ask you to pack this stuff up and ship it home?”

“Yes.” I sank onto the couch.

“And didn’t you call Ruth this morning and ask her if she wanted you to and she said yes, please?”

“Yes.”

“You seriously need to get a grip. Every errand isn’t a covert operation.”

“Fine,” I said tight-lipped, but I knew she was right. “Let’s get to packing.”

She tossed me a saucy grin. “You’re welcome, sugar. It was my pleasure to come help you.”

A smile tipped the corners of my mouth. “Thank you.”

“That’s more like it.”

I opened the top drawer and Carly said, “Whoa, baby.”

Holly apparently owned stock in a lingerie company.
